Adiantum aleuticum Western Maidenhair Fern

  • Great Plant Picks Selection

The Western Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum aleuticum) is a graceful, deciduous fern native to western North America, highly valued in the nursery trade for its ornamental and ecological appeal. Its distinctive fan-shaped, bright green leaflets are arranged along striking black, wiry stems, creating a fine-textured, airy appearance that stands out in shade gardens and native landscapes.  Typically grows to about 12 to 24 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide.

This fern thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soils and prefers part to full shade. It is especially well suited to the cool, temperate climate of the Pacific Northwest. Western Maidenhair is hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 9.  This fern is generally pest-free, deer-resistant, and low-maintenance once established, though it does not tolerate drought or drying winds.
