Bouteloua gracilis 'Honeycomb' PP33101
Bouteloua gracilis ‘Honeycomb’ is a compact, ornamental selection of blue grama grass known for its distinctive golden, eyelash-like seed heads and exceptional resilience in dry conditions. Developed by Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, this cultivar brings refined structure and long-season interest to water-wise and naturalistic landscapes.
Growing 24 to 30 inches tall and spreading about 18 to 24 inches, ‘Honeycomb’ forms a tidy, upright clump of fine, gray-green foliage that sways gently with the wind. Its standout feature is the golden-blonde seed heads that appear in mid to late summer, rising on slender stems and arching out like little combs or eyelashes. These seed heads persist into winter, providing visual interest well beyond the growing season.
This grass thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, including sandy, rocky, or even lean soils. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant, making it ideal for xeriscapes, meadow gardens, and low-maintenance borders. It’s hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 10, showing excellent adaptability across a wide range of climates.
