Carex woodii Wood’s sedge
Carex woodii is a fine-textured sedge that forms soft, arching clumps of bright green foliage. Its narrow, grass-like leaves often reach about 12 to 18 inches in length and tend to droop elegantly, creating a fountain-like effect. In early to mid-spring, it produces distinctive straw colored flower spikes on short stems that rise slightly above or nestle within the foliage.
Prefers moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and thrives in dappled shade to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. It spreads slowly by short rhizomes, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing in woodland gardens or for understory planting beneath trees without becoming invasive. Deer-resistant, low-maintenance, and beneficial for wildlife.
