Fargesia scabrida Clumping Bamboo
Fargesia scabrida is a striking and graceful species of clumping bamboo native to the mountainous regions of western China. This bamboo is non-invasive, forming tight, well-behaved clumps that make it suitable for gardens and ornamental landscapes. It typically grows to a height of 10 to 15 feet, with slender, upright canes that emerge in shades of deep purple or bluish tones before gradually maturing to green or yellow. These colorful culms, combined with the plant’s narrow, arching leaves, give it a refined, almost feathery appearance. The foliage is dense and elegant, cascading softly from the canes and moving gently with the breeze, adding a dynamic visual texture to the garden.
Fargesia scabrida thrives in partial shade but is also capable of adapting to full sun, provided it receives adequate moisture. Hardy to 0°F, it performs well in temperate climates and is also suitable for container planting on patios or terraces. A beautiful standalone specimen that also works wonderfully as a living screen or hedge, offering year-round privacy and greenery.
