Vitis riparia x labrusca Valiant

Vitis ‘Valiant’ is a cold-hardy grape cultivar developed by South Dakota State University. This hybrid of Vitis riparia and Vitis labrusca, combines the resilience of wild grapes with high fruit quality.  The ‘Valiant’ grapevine is a vigorous climber, reaching heights of 15 to 20 feet, and produces small, dark blue to black berries. These grapes are sweet and tangy, with the characteristic “foxy” flavor typical of Vitis labrusca hybrids.

The fruit ripens in late August to early September, making it perfect for juice, jelly, and wine production. While the vine is self-fertile, it benefits from planting near other varieties to enhance fruit set. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. Due to its exceptional cold tolerance, ‘Valiant’ is ideal for cold-weather regions such as the Upper Midwest, Northeast, Great Plains, and Rocky Mountain regions, as well as areas with harsh winters in Canada.  ‘Valiant’ offers growers in these colder climates a reliable option for grape cultivation.
