Yucca gloriosa Variegata
Yucca gloriosa ‘Variegata’ is a naturally occurring variegated form of Yucca gloriosa, a species native to the southeastern United States, particularly coastal regions from North Carolina to Florida. It likely originated as a chance mutation selected for its ornamental foliage, and has since become a widely cultivated garden plant due to its distinctive variegation and adaptability.
This cultivar is characterized by rigid, sword-shaped leaves with bold cream to yellow margins and blue-green centers, forming symmetrical rosettes that offer striking year-round color and texture. Unlike many other Yucca, Y. gloriosa tends to form a short, tree-like trunk with age, giving it an almost sculptural appearance. Mature plants produce tall, dramatic spikes of white, bell-shaped flowers, typically blooming in late summer to fall. Its architectural form, high drought and salt tolerance, and evergreen nature make it particularly well-suited for coastal gardens, xeriscaping, and Mediterranean-style landscapes.
